Social Media Snapshot of Dublin City Marathon 2013

#DUBLINMARATHON Social Media Snapshot

More than 14-thousand participants took to the streets for the 34th Dublin City Marathon and Newsaccess was there to monitor what was being said on social media about this inspirational annual event.  It was a successful day for Irish athletes with a huge level of interest and support coming from Twitter.  Social Buzz was also bolstered by the many companies associated with the event.

• The statistics: 26.2 miles + 14,500 athletes = 1,740 Tweets with a potential reach of 4,362,046 people.

• The 34th Dublin Marathon saw a double win for the Irish in the Men’s and Women’s race.  Sean Hehir and Maria Mc Cambridge crossing the finish line led to a spike in twitter activity after 11am with a peak of 209 tweets between 11am and 12pm.

• @LucozadeIreland has a strong association with the event and their #wallofsupport campaign for the Dublin Marathon showed a strong presence with 235 original tweets and potential audience reach of 65,854.

• Think running a marathon is tough?  Then try doing it on crutches.  One of the most amazing feats of the day was Irish Girl Guides boss Liz O’Brien managing to complete the #dublinmarathon - 28 original tweets celebrating her success including mentions from the likes of charity partner @justgiving made Liz’s success a talking point of the day.

  • Many commercial entities are also involved in the event.  Airtricity - the main sponsor generating a large amount of twitter interaction, followed by FM104 and many others.

• While the athletes pounded the streets, Irish humour dominated the twttersphere with the top re-tweet of the entire event coming in joke-form just before the 11am – no doubt contributing to the #dublinmarathon peak between 11 and Midday.
